Bio: I have been teaching learn-to-skate since 2000 and private lessons and synchronized skating since 2002. I have also been the learn-to-skate Administrative Director since 2011. I grew up on the East side of the state and have been skating since age 3. I attended WMU and was on the Varsity Senior synchronized skating team for 3 years, competing Nationally and Internationally. Using my B.A. in Accounting from WMU,  I work full time for a security and fire alarm company as the Accounting Coordinator. I have also Co-Chaired numerous GKSA events including Skate the Zoo, 2013 Midwestern & Pacific Synchronized Skating Championships, and 2016 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships.

Bio: Trained under Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband, coaches of 2010 and 2014 Olympic Ice Dance Gold and Silver medalists Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir and Meryl Davis & Charlie White. Trained alongside said Olympic champions for four years in Canton, MI at the Arctic Edge of Canton. Competed for freestyle from 2000-2005, pairs in 2005, and ice dancing from 2000-’03 and 2007-’12. Competed for ice dancing in 9 different countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. Taught Basic Skills and private lessons in Canton, MI from 2010-2012. Teaching in Kalamazoo, MI since 2013. Partners all levels of dance tests including International dances. Trains solo ice dancers for the National Solo Dance Series. Current student at Western Michigan University studying Biomedical Sciences.

Bio: US Figure Skating Member, Professional Skating Association Member, Testing: Gold Moves in the field, Pre-Gold Dance, Juvenile Freestyle. I grew up skating in Canton, Ohio where I suffered a back injury early in my career which ultimately led me to synchronized skating, which became the huge driving passion of my life and skating career. I traveled to Cleveland most of my high school career to compete with many different skating teams from the open juvenile to the Junior division. 

After high school I moved to Western Michigan University where I skated for the WMU Senior Varsity team for four years, cross-skated to the Collegiate team for my junior and senior year, and served as the Board President for one year. During that time I was on Team USA which competed internationally for two years. I graduated from WMU in 2011 which my Bachelors in elementary education. I began teaching in Kalamazoo Public Schools in 2012 and since then have earned my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Last year, I got married to my husband Ian and bought our first home in Kalamazoo, making me a permanent Michigan resident, much to my Ohio family’s dismay 🙂 I currently am a 3rd Grade reading teacher in KPS. I am beyond excited to be joining the GKSA Club and the Michigan skating family.

Bio:  Jennifer Heurlin-Brenne has been teaching in Kalamazoo since 1993.  In that time she has coached skaters to the Junior National level as well as coaching skaters through several Gold Medal level tests including Moves in the Field, Freestyle and Ice Dance. Heurlin-Brenne moved to Kalamazoo in 1993 after an extensive career as a pair skater.  She and her partner, John Frederiksen, trained in Colorado Springs, Co at the world-renowned Broadmoor World Arena and at the University of Delaware Training Center in Newark, Delaware. The team represented the US in several international competitions including 4 World Junior Championships, where they captured the Bronze medal in 1990 & 1991, Skate Canada and Skate America.  Heurlin and Frederiksen were also the 1989 US Figure Skating Championships, Junior Pair Champions. Their partnership ended in 1992.  Jennifer graduated from Western Michigan University with a BS in Merchandising. Jennifer has 2 daughters, Jordan and Natalie, who also love to skate!

Bio: Nikki Czuhajewski grew up skating in Kalamazoo and was part of the Kalamazoo Kinetic Synchronized Skating teams and high school figure skating teams (2012-2015). She has taught Learn-to-Skate in Kalamazoo for 5 years. She was also a member of the Crystallettes Junior Synchronized skating team in 2015 where they placed 6th at nationals and were placed into the International Selection Pool for the following season.

In addition to synchronized skating, she participated in the National Solo Dance Series, where she is a six-time national medalist in pattern dance, the combined free dance event, and shadow dance events. She now attends Adrian College and is pursing a degree in Marketing. She is continuing her skating career at Adrian and is a member of their Senior Synchronized skating team and intercollegiate figure skating team. She is a 2-time international competitor for Team USA synchronized skating. In her freshman season, she became the 2016 Intercollegiate Team Championships Senior Solo Dance champion, as well as medaling in two other events.

Bio: Sophie Cucci is a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has been coaching basic skills classes at GKSA since 2014, and this is her first year as a private coach. In addition to basic skills, she has helped with the exhibition synchronized skating teams in the past. She is the VP of External Relations for the University of Michigan Synchronized Skating Team. She has also represented the United States of America at the French Cup with the Crystallettes Synchronized Skating Team.

Bio: Hanna began skating with the Mount Pleasant Figure Skating Club in 2009 and has trained under many coaches, including Ginni Phillips, Rebecca Palmer, Sergey Magerovskiy, and Liubov Chernikova. She is currently training under Jessica LaPorte. Hanna began coaching at the Mount Pleasant Figure Skating Club in 2014 as a Basic Skills Instructor. In 2015, Hanna was a volunteer coach at the Novi Basic Skills Camp alongside former USFS Basic Skills Director Erin Schopf and became MPFSC’s LTS Performance Choreographer. In 2016, she began giving private lessons. She is currently a sophomore and studying Travel & Tourism, Japanese, and German at Western Michigan University.

Bio: I lived and grew up in Illinois when I began skating. I previously skated synchro for The Downers Grove Dazzlers and Starfire Synchronized Skating Team. As I wanted to continue my education after high school I also wanted to continue synchro which I did for 3 years at Grand Valley State University. Freshman year I won the Rookie of the Year Award. I also held the position of Secretary my sophomore year and Finance Officer my junior year. Upon graduation, I received my Bachelors in Education and Mathematics as well as decided to reside in Michigan. Last year I was able to rekindle my love for skating while joining GKSA in coaching for their Learn to Skate program. I currently teach 7th grade for Niles Community Schools.

Bio: Sarah started her love for skating at 6 years old and has been at the Greater Kalamazoo Skating Association ever since. She has since had many experiences throughout her skating career including:

  • Skating on the Kalamazoo Kinetic Synchronized Skating team (2006-2013)
  • Obtaining multiple National Solo Dance medals (Years 2011-2015)
  • Participating in Nancy Kerrigan’s “Halloween on Ice” show (October 2015)
  • Becoming a Triple Gold Medalist (Moves in the Field, Free skate, Ice Dance)
  • Performing on Disney On Ice’s “Dare to Dream” tour (2016-2017)
  • She is now returning to school to further her education while continuing her skating career. Bio: I have been helping out with skate school since I was twelve. I started volunteering at Homewood-Flossmoor Ice Arena in Illinois, became a group lesson coach at the Midwest Training Center in Indiana at the age of 16, and for the past 3 years, I have been coaching group lessons for GKSA. I skated for the Homewood-Flossmoor synchronize skating team, The Icettes, at the preliminary and pre-juvenile levels. I was also a regional competitor at the Open-Juvenile, Intermediate, and Junior freestyle levels. I have done some training in Colorado Springs during my Junior level year. I have 3 years of strength and conditioning professional training on and off the ice and volunteered to help other skaters achieve proper technique while weight lifting and working with resistance bands. I have completed my Senior moves in the field and freestyle tests.
