2015-2016 Team Flyer

“Kalamazoo Area” is comprised of many skaters and schools within the area.  Past teams consisted of skaters from many of the area schools: Climax, Schoolcraft, Mattawan, Portage, Kalamazoo, Hackett, Kalamazoo Christian and Three Rivers.  Our High School Team is open to ANY skater enrolled in Grades 9 – 12.  We welcome and encourage high school age skaters to participate in this awesome opportunity to get to know other skaters in our area and work as a team.  We usually travel the night before a competition creating a wonderful bonding time that is positive and fun for all.

High School Figure Skaters in Michigan compete in 5 Districts, each composed of 6-12 teams.  Each school or combined area of schools, may field any or all of “A”, “B”, and “C” level teams and each level team competes separately (i.e. A teams compete against other A teams, B teams against other B teams, etc).   Each level team must have at least 2 skaters per level, with skaters skating cross levels depending on test levels and coach’s discretion.

The “A” teams have the most difficult elements; “C” teams have the least difficult. Teams participate in 3 initial-round competitions within their own District, and then the victors from each district meet in a final State Championship Competition in March.

The initial-round competitions in each district are Team Compulsory competitions.  At these competitions, there are 3 events at each level – a Jumps event, a Spins event, and a Moves event.  Each event has four elements for A & B level teams, and three elements for C level teams.  Elements are performed by a single skater from each level team, in team rotation.  Throughout the season elements may rotate between skaters and competitions.  Each competition lasts about 4 hours, competing against other teams within their own district to earn a position in a final Team Event at the State Championships.  Qualifying teams for the 2-day State Championship will follow the same competition format as described above, with an overall medal given to the team who earns the most points during State Championships. The High School State Championship also offers a large variety of individual events such as free skating, dance, and showcase allowing skaters to earn State Individual medals.

Team Level Requirements/Maximum Test Levels:

* A team skaters there are no restrictions.

* B team skaters must have passed no higher than Intermediate Moves and Juvenile FS.

* C team skaters must have passed no higher than Preliminary Moves and Pre-preliminary FS.
